CHAPTER ONE - WHAT IS PUBLIC RELATIONS (PR)?

As PR is all about communicating effectively with the people who influence your target audience, there are vital skills you should know and use all the time. Dale Carnegie summarises the most important fundamental techniques for successfully handling people.

CHAPTER TWO - HOW IT ALL BEGAN - FROM GREEN KNICKERS TO HARD SELL

The real strength of PR lies in the fact that there is no hard sell. It is all about the value of third-party endorsement – so it is vital that you find, get to know, and regularly communicate your messages to those influential people who will then tell your target audience how marvellous you are, without you having to boast.

CHAPTER THREE - CLEANING UP

Case studies are the fundamentals of third-party endorsement and it is therefore important for your PR that you are collecting, writing and pitching them to your target media on a regular basis. Dig deep and ask lots of questions when you are collecting your information as there may be a more interesting story in the case study than just that they have used your product or service successfully.

Every business should have a crisis management plan in case the worst happens to it, and working with journalists and building strong, respectful relationships with them are fundamental for good PR.

Planning everything, including every eventuality, every photographic opportunity and creating, updating and sticking to very comprehensive, and flexible lists is vital for the PR success for an event you are arranging.

You need to be interesting and newsworthy for your target media to use you, and your stories need to be something that their readers (your target audience) would want to read about.

CHAPTER NINE - THE MARVELLOUS ENTREPRENEUR PR PARADOX

For your PR to be a success, you need to create, and stick to, a simple plan focussing on Market, Media, Message. Work out whom you want to attract, which media would be the best route to get you in front of them and which messages would work most strongly.
